Ogunquit's Marginal Way is a famous, mostly paved 1.25 to 1.5-mile scenic coastal path, stretching from the downtown village to Perkins Cove areas of the town. It offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, rocky cliffs, houses, and beaches, featuring 39 benches and the Lobster Point Lighthouse. It is one of the best spots to see the sunrise! Do not be surprised if you see Plein Air painters, photographers and a wedding happening along the way too!
The Marginal Way is open year round, but is often not plowed or shoveled in the winter months. Note, dogs are welcome on the path from October 1 to March 31.
Lobster Point Lighthouse is a charming, miniature, 23 feet tall "lighthouse" located halfway along the Marginal Way cliff path in Ogunquit. While it is a popular spot for photos, it is not an official aid to navigation; rather, it is a creative disguise for a pumping station. The original structure was built in 1948 by Winfield C. Littlefield and designed by Grover S. Perkins.
Little beach is just north of the Lobster Point Lighthouse and a small rocky beach perfect spot for a chair and a book, while enjoying the sound of the waves coming in.
Mount Agamenticus, also known as "Mount A" or "Big A" is a 691-foot monadnock in York, Maine, that serves as a major recreational and conservation landmark. It is the centerpiece of a 30,000-acre conservation region and offers a rare 360-degree view that extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the White Mountains.
Wildlife Viewing: It is a premier location for viewing hawk migrations in the fall. The region also supports diverse species like bobcats, deer, and rare turtles.
Visitors can either hike/bike/snowshoe to the summit from the base parking lots or drive to the top via a paved road.
Trails and summit access are generally open daily from dawn to dusk (roughly 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM depending on the season).
Hiking & Biking: There are over 40 miles of trails ranging from easy walks to technical mountain biking paths.
Winter Sports: When conditions allow, the area is used for snowshoeing and sledding.
The summit features observation decks, picnic tables, and composting restrooms. The Mount Agamenticus Learning Lodge (housed in a former ski lodge) offers educational exhibits and is typically open on weekends from Memorial Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day.
Ogunquit's Beach is often rated in the top ten beach on the east coast and once you step on the beach, you understand why! From the fine sand between your toes to the views, it is heaven on earth.
The beach is open year round. There is no charge for the beach, except if you decide to park in a beach parking lot. The beach is very accessible and a short distance from most of our inns, within 1/4 mile.
Note, leashed dogs are allowed on the beach from September 9 to March 31 (Ogunquit Beach is home to protected Piping Plovers, which nest in our beach sand during the Spring and Summer.
Main Beach is the southern most part of Ogunquit Beach and located closest to the center of the village. This section of the beach is located just across a small bridge, where you can see the Ogunquit River ending into the ocean. On the river side, many like to gather for wading without the waves on the ocean side. On the ocean side, we strongly recommend walking north a few hundred feet and setting up where there is more beach space, when it is high tide there is very little beach space on the most southern section.
There is a paid parking lot nearest the beach, which fills quickly in season. There is also a parking lot located on River Road just before the bridge.
Section 3, on Main Beach and several hundred yards away from the southern entrance, is often where you can find the LGTBQ+ community gathering. It is usually marked by a pride flag in the sand.
On Labor Day weekend, join Mainestreet for their annual Mr. Gay Ogunquit contest on the beach!
